Jesse Hughes AKA Jackson Elias

American Author on Death Cults

New York City, New York

Current Lima, Peru Hotel Murray

Jesse Hughes—also known as Jackson Elias—presents himself as warm, charming, and effortlessly personable, the kind of man who puts others at ease without trying too hard. An American author known for investigating death cults and the darker corners of belief, he carries both curiosity and caution in equal measure. To Alan Knight, however, he is more than a name or reputation—there is a personal connection there, one that suggests a shared past beyond this meeting.

3 p.m. on March 19, at the Museo de Arqueología y Antropología

The party meets Larkin and begins to learn about the expedition, forming their first impressions of him.

Shares what he’s learned. Larkin, he explains, had already attempted to hire locals in Puno to guide him to the pyramid—but every one of them refused. Not out of inconvenience, but fear. He adds that Mendoza, in particular, was spoken of in hushed tones, called a kharisiri—a thing that takes from the living in the night. Jackson dismisses it outwardly as superstition, but his tone suggests he isn’t entirely convinced. Then, more quietly, he admits his deeper concern: that Larkin and Mendoza may be connected to something far more dangerous—a death cult.

Jackson accompanies the party to the Museo de Arqueología y Antropología, where they meet with Professor Sánchez and begin examining materials tied to the pyramid. What begins as a promising lead quickly turns chaotic—the sudden fire and attack shatter the moment, throwing the museum into confusion. In the midst of smoke and panic, and in the disorder that follows, the party loses sight of him entirely. At the time the attack on Sánchez unfolds, his whereabouts are unknown. Jackson admits he’s not good in a crisis.
